Bolivian transport sector demands 45% fare hike amid rising fuel costs

Transport operators in Bolivia are facing a financial crisis due to rising operational costs and declining passenger demand. Following changes to diesel subsidies, transport leaders report that fuel expenses for certain long-distance routes have doubled, rising from approximately Bs 5,000 to Bs 10,000.

Negotiations between transport unions and the Authority for the Regulation and Supervision of Telecommunications and Transport (ATT) regarding fare increases remain deadlocked. Transport leaders are demanding a 45% increase in interdepartmental fares to offset costs, while the ATT has proposed a 15% adjustment, labeling the union's request as excessive.

The crisis has led to significant service disruptions. In regions such as La Paz, the frequency of departures to destinations like Copacabana and Apolo has been reduced by 50% as operators struggle with low occupancy rates and high costs. A national meeting in La Paz is expected to continue discussions regarding the new tariff structures.
