Bolivian Vice President Edmand Lara Proposes Police Salary and Pension Reform

On 24 June 2026, Bolivia’s vice‑president Edmand Lara announced a draft law – the “Ley de Revalorización Salarial Integral, Reconocimiento Académico y Dignificación Laboral y Jubilatoria” – aimed at improving pay, housing and benefits for police officers and granting them a full‑salary pension. The bill will be introduced in parliament by deputy Patricia Patiño.

Lara, a former police captain who was dismissed in 2023 after denouncing corruption, said the police profession is “one of the most ungrateful jobs” and called the proposal a “just recognition” of their service. He also urged legislators to act quickly and stressed the need to keep the force free from political interference, stating that “the police belong to the people, not to parties.”

The measure comes amid Bolivia’s broader economic crisis and tensions between Lara and the police high command. Analysts note that the law’s fiscal demands could be significant, but supporters view it as a long‑overdue debt to the police force.
