Central Obrera Boliviana declares emergency over economic decrees

The Central Obrera Boliviana (COB) has declared a state of emergency in response to recent government decrees issued by the administration of Rodrigo Paz. COB executive secretary Mario Argollo expressed concern over the rising cost of living and the loss of purchasing power for families, particularly those with lower incomes. The union is coordinating with regional and departmental labor organizations to prepare a unified response to these measures.

One major point of contention is Supreme Decree 5750, which adjusts electricity tariff calculations by incorporating inflation, fuel types, and flexible dollar exchange rates. Deputy José Luis Porcel criticized the decree, stating it serves to mask imminent increases in electricity costs. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the upcoming General State Budget, which reportedly excludes subsidies for gasoline and diesel.

Economic pressures are also being felt in the food sector. In Cochabamba, independent bakers have warned that the price of bread may rise to 1 boliviano per unit due to the increasing costs of flour and sugar. Meanwhile, in Oruro and Santa Cruz, health workers are protesting unpaid vaccination and risk bonuses, with some threatening strikes if the central government does not fulfill its payment obligations.
