Bolivia's official dollar hits Bs12.15, highest since flexible exchange regime
The Banco Central de Bolivia (BCB) set the official U.S. dollar exchange rate at Bs 12.15 on 31 July 2026, the highest level recorded since the country moved to a flexible exchange‑rate regime on 29 June. The rate rose from Bs 11.89 the day before, a 26‑cent increase and the steepest daily move since the transition. Since the regime began, the official rate has climbed from Bs 9.73 to Bs 12.15, a gain of Bs 2.42 in one month.
The BCB announced that it holds about US$639 million in foreign‑exchange reserves to intervene when needed and expects roughly US$1 billion of additional dollars from its IMF agreement by year‑end. A new regulation authorising the central bank to buy and sell dollars to curb “sobrerreacción” in the market was approved.
Economy Minister José Gabriel Espinoza said the dollar is stabilising, rejected claims of a devaluation, and noted the official rate is currently Bs 11.80 with the parallel market at Bs 11.86‑11.87. BCB president David Espinoza added that the transition is proceeding orderly and projected inflation to remain in single‑digit territory through 2027.
