Bolivia's economy under strain as blockades persist, analyst warns of IMF need

Political analyst Carlos Valverde warned that the Bolivian government lacks the capacity to resolve the deepening economic crisis triggered by weeks of nationwide blockades. He noted that the state budget has not been approved for the sixth month and that external financing—at least $8 billion from the International Monetary Fund or the World Bank—would be required to avert a larger debacle. Valverde also said the prolonged blockades have eroded international investor confidence and hampered the country's ability to attract foreign capital.

An accompanying commentary highlighted that the blockades, now approaching 50 days, have devastated Bolivia's economy despite the country's abundant natural resources and entrepreneurial resilience. The piece argued that the main obstacle is a lack of confidence among citizens and policymakers, calling the situation a “conversion problem” that could be addressed through better governance and institutional stability.
