Bolivia's La Paz holiday plan debated as businesses seek economic boost

Bolivia’s private sector has asked the government to move the departmental holiday commemorating La Paz, scheduled for Thursday 16 July, to the following Friday. The proposal was presented by Eduardo Olivo, president of the Cámara Nacional de Comercio, who argues that shifting the day would avoid a two‑day work stoppage and help recover from more than 50 days of road blockades that cost over $3 billion.

The Ministry of Labor is also reviewing a separate request to extend the holiday through 19 July. Minister Williams Bascopé said no decision has been made, noting the need for continued work after the blockage period. La Paz Mayor César Dockweiler and tourism director Marco Mercado support the extension, estimating a boost of about Bs 70 million for the regional economy. Both initiatives aim to revive activity while balancing tourism benefits with productivity concerns.
