Bologna extends 'red zone' surveillance until March 2027

Authorities in Bologna have extended the 'red zones'—areas under enhanced surveillance—for an additional six months, until March 31, 2027. The decision was made during a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security, attended by Prefect Enrico Ricci, Chief Prosecutor Paolo Guido, Mayor Matteo Lepore, and police leadership.

The extension covers critical and degraded urban areas, including Bolognina, Montagnola, and the station district. Officials cited recent statistical data showing a “significant decrement of all types of crime” in these zones as a primary reason for maintaining the measure. The continued surveillance aims to prevent violent, threatening, or harassing behavior that endangers public safety and the usability of urban spaces.

City Councilor for Security Matilde Madrid described the approach as an “integrated urban security idea,” combining law enforcement with efforts to improve public lighting, video surveillance, and the revitalization of unused spaces to combat urban decay.
