Olio dei Colli di Bologna receives EU Protected Geographical Indication status

The European Commission has officially granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status to Olio dei Colli di Bologna, an extra virgin olive oil produced in the hills of the Bologna metropolitan area. This recognition highlights the unique environmental conditions of the region, including its proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage site ‘Karst in the evaporites and caves of the Northern Apennines’.

The oil is characterized by low free acidity (not exceeding 0.3%) and a balanced organoleptic profile featuring medium intensity notes of fruit, bitterness, and spiciness. Production regulations allow for both monovarietal oils, using at least 85% of specific cultivars like Correggiolo or Frantoio, and blends.

With this addition, the Emilia-Romagna region now boasts 46 DOP and IGP products, reinforcing its position as a leader in European agri-food quality. Nationally, this brings the total number of Italian agricultural products with EU-recognized quality status to 346, including 178 DOP and 168 IGP products.
