Italy expands investigation into doctors issuing false medical certificates

The Ravenna Public Prosecutor's Office has expanded an investigation into a suspected network of medical professionals accused of issuing false health certificates. These documents were allegedly used to prevent irregular migrants from being transferred to or detained in Repatriation Centers (CPR).

Police conducted searches across nine Italian cities, including Bari, Bologna, Florence, Milan, and Rome, targeting 23 doctors. Most of those searched are not currently listed as formal suspects, though the investigation aims to gather electronic and documentary evidence. The probe follows a previous phase in Ravenna that resulted in eight doctors being investigated for forgery and interruption of public service regarding 34 suspicious certificates.

Prosecutors suggest the existence of a coordinated effort, citing the use of a shared template for non-suitability certificates across various hospitals. In response, political leaders like Matteo Salvini have called for the professional disbarment of any doctors found guilty. Conversely, labor unions and immigration advocacy groups have expressed solidarity with the medical professionals, arguing that healthcare duties must remain independent of security policies and that CPRs often violate fundamental human rights.
