Bologna introduces first tram as Genoa's AMT faces financial crisis

In Bologna, the first CAF-produced tram has arrived at the Borgo Panigale depot, marking a major milestone for the city's sustainable mobility infrastructure. Mayor Matteo Lepore announced that the new bidirectional vehicles, which can carry up to 300 passengers under heavy load, will undergo technical testing throughout September. To mitigate the impact of years of construction, the administration has promised free tram service during the initial months of operation.

Meanwhile, in Genoa, the public transport company AMT is facing a severe financial crisis, with projected losses of 56 million euros for 2024. Vice Mayor Alessandro Terrile stated that a negotiated settlement to avoid bankruptcy is expected by November, aiming to secure approximately 3,000 jobs. The municipality has allocated an additional two million euros to help stabilize the service.

On a broader scale, the European Commission is promoting the 2026 European Mobility Week from September 16 to 22, focusing on generational inclusion and addressing transport poverty to ensure equitable access to services for all age groups.
