Bologna newborn left in ‘Culla per la vita’ facility

A newborn baby, symbolically named Maria Stella, was left in the ‘Culla per la vita’ (Cradle for Life) in Bologna on Saturday, August 8. The facility, located at the community of the Suore Minime dell’Addolorata, triggered an alarm at approximately 10:48 PM. The infant was found in good condition, clean, and well-cared for, and was immediately handed over to emergency medical services.

This marks the first time the facility has been used since its inauguration in May 2017. Stefano Coccolini of the Associazione Medici Cattolici (AMCI) noted that the alarm system alerted him directly via his mobile phone.

Following the event, Coccolini emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding the existence of the cradle to assist those in fragile or emergency situations. He also called for collaboration with the local health authority (Ausl) and highlighted the financial challenges of maintaining the system, which costs thousands of euros to operate.
