Mayor Matteo Lepore receives police escort after threats tied to Abderrahim Fakir death

Abderrahim Fakir, a 42‑year‑old Moroccan man, died during a police containment operation in Bologna’s Pilastro district on 19 July 2026. The incident sparked public outcry; about two thousand residents marched in the neighbourhood demanding truth and justice for Fakir.

Mayor Matteo Lepore received heavy death threats on social media after the protests. The Prefecture of Bologna assigned a protective detail, including agents of the Guardia di Finanza, to escort the mayor. Lepore said he did not request the escort, filed a formal complaint and expressed confidence in the State’s protection.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced that investigations are ongoing and voiced confidence in the police’s conduct. Body‑cam footage released by the media shows a blood spot on Fakir’s head and a new frame depicting four passersby assisting the officers during the containment. The Fakir family launched a crowdfunding campaign that has raised over €8 000 from more than 300 donors to cover legal costs.
