Abderrahim Fakir's Death Sparks Protests and Political Fallout in Bologna
On July 19, 2026, 42‑year‑old Moroccan migrant Abderrahim Fakir died after being restrained by police in Bologna’s Pilastro district. Video footage shows officers using pepper spray and holding him on the ground, after which he lost consciousness and later died. An autopsy and forensic examinations are pending.
The incident triggered violent riots in Bologna, leaving at least 64 police officers injured. Demonstrations spread to other Italian cities, including a peaceful presidio in Udine demanding “truth and justice.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attacks on police and called for a rigorous investigation, while Vice‑Prime Minister Matteo Salvini visited injured officers, defended the force’s actions and criticised the mayor’s tone in organizing public gatherings. Morocco’s foreign ministry has also asked Italian authorities for a full clarification of Fakir’s death.
Prosecutors have opened an inquiry, and the case remains under investigation as public debate over police conduct and civil order continues across Italy.
