Bologna speed camera sparks controversy after issuing 45,000 fines
A new speed camera installed on Viale Vittorio Sabenalo in Bologna has sparked significant controversy due to the high volume of fines it is issuing. Between March and June, the device recorded 45,241 infractions, averaging approximately 29 fines per hour and 700 per day.
The speed limit on this stretch of road is set at 50 km/h. Local motorists have expressed frustration on social media, arguing that the limit is too low for a wide, two-lane road without intersections, making it easy to inadvertently exceed the limit. Bologna remains one of the highest revenue-generating cities for speeding fines in Italy, trailing only Florence in total annual collections.
Separately, Legambiente is launching the 16th edition of the ‘Giretto d’Italia’ during the European Mobility Week. The initiative aims to promote sustainable urban mobility and cycling in Italy, where car ownership remains among the highest in Europe and cycling infrastructure lags behind neighboring countries.
