Bologna unrest fuels centre‑right calls for mayor Matteo Lepore’s resignation

Violent clashes erupted in Bologna during a protest for the late Moroccan migrant Abderrahim Fakir. The disorder left the city physically damaged and socially divided.

The centre‑right coalition demanded that mayor Matteo Lepore, who organized the demonstration, step down, while Lepore defended his actions and blamed the trouble on a minority of rioters. The Democratic Party praised Lepore, saying he should be thanked for launching the protest. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, calling it unacceptable and urging a thorough investigation without prejudice.

Authorities are preparing an urgent parliamentary inquiry into the incident, and the city’s police have compiled a list of those involved in the unrest.
