Bolotana, Sardinia, identified as potential new Blue Zone for longevity

Researchers have identified the mountain village of Bolotana in Sardinia, Italy, as a potential new “Blue Zone” due to an exceptional concentration of centenarians, particularly among women. A study published in Frontiers in Aging by scientists from the University of Sassari and the University of Alabama at Birmingham analyzed demographic data from 2021 to 2025.

The findings indicate that a 70-year-old woman in Bolotana has a 13.83% chance of reaching age 100, a rate significantly higher than the Italian average of 3.54%. This places the village’s female longevity second globally, following only Hong Kong. While men in the village also show higher-than-average life expectancy, the pattern is much more pronounced in the female population.

Epidemiologist S. Jay Olshansky noted that the population may be one of the longest-living female groups in the world. Researchers are investigating whether this longevity is driven by diet, physical activity, genetics, or community ties. The study utilized historical parish and civil records dating back to 1900 to validate the ages of residents.
