Bolotana, Sardinia, identified as potential new longevity hotspot
The Sardinian village of Bolotana has been identified as a potential new ‘Blue Zone’ due to its extraordinary concentration of centenarians. Research published in the journal ‘Frontiers in Aging’ indicates that women in the village who reach age 70 have an estimated 13.8 percent chance of living to 100, a rate significantly higher than the 3.5 percent average for women in Italy.
Key factors contributing to this longevity include a diet composed of approximately 90 percent plant-based foods, such as beans, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, wheat, and olive oil. Many residents produce their own food through local farming and sheep herding.
While Sardinia is already recognized for centenarian men in regions like Ogliastra and Nuoro, Bolotana is distinguishing itself through the longevity of its female population. Notable residents include 102-year-old Maddalena Falchi and 101-year-old Giovannina Marras.
