Bolsa Família: 120,000 families face potential benefit blocks

More than 120,000 families receiving the Bolsa Família social welfare program in Brazil face the risk of having their August payments blocked or suspended. The Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS) monitors compliance with program requirements to ensure resources reach eligible households.

Potential blocks are driven by three main factors:

1. Education: Failure to maintain minimum school attendance (80% for children aged 4–5 and 75% for those aged 6–17). 2. Health: Incomplete vaccination schedules for children under 7, failure to perform biannual weight and height monitoring, or lack of prenatal care for pregnant women. 3. Registration: Outdated information in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico), specifically for families who have not updated their data in over 24 months or failed to attend mandatory audits.

The government applies a scale of sanctions ranging from warnings and temporary blocks (where accumulated funds are released after updates) to suspension and final cancellation of the benefit.
