Bolsa Família rules clarify voting and employment impacts

The Bolsa Família social program in Brazil maintains specific rules regarding eligibility and benefit maintenance. Contrary to common misconceptions, failing to vote in elections does not result in the loss of benefits. While not voting may create pending issues with the Electoral Justice system, it is not a conditionality for the program. Instead, requirements focus on health and education, such as school attendance for children and adolescents, vaccination schedules, and prenatal care for pregnant women.

Additionally, obtaining formal employment does not trigger an immediate cancellation of the benefit. Under the ‘Protection Rule’ established by the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, families can maintain a partial benefit if the per capita income rises to a level up to R$ 706.00 per month. In such cases, the family may receive half of the original benefit for up to 18 months to assist with the financial transition. If income falls again, the ‘Guaranteed Return’ mechanism allows for prioritized reentry into the program for up to 36 months.
