Bolsonarismo movement criticized for political and social impact in Brazil

Michael França argues that the Bolsonarismo movement has negatively impacted Brazil by polarizing public debate and undermining republican institutions. He contends that the movement shifted the political right away from principled ideas toward a conspiratorial logic.

França highlights the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as a primary example, noting that scientific evidence was often replaced by ideological warfare. He points to vaccine skepticism and the promotion of unproven treatments, such as chloroquine, as evidence of a neglect for public health in favor of political identity. This period contributed to Brazil having the second-highest number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths globally.

Furthermore, the critique suggests that despite rhetoric aimed at dismantling 'the system,' the movement ultimately engaged in traditional political practices, including opportunism and the use of power for personal or partisan convenience.
