Bolsward post office building designed by Rijksbouwmeester Peters demolished

The historic post office on Jongemastraat in Bolsward, designed by the Dutch state architect (Rijksbouwmeester) Peters, has been demolished. The building, once a prominent municipal facility after the 1850 Post Law required every town to have a post office, was noted for its near‑monumental architecture and close ties to the town. Its removal marks the loss of a structure that reflected the shift from privately run post offices to municipal ownership in the 19th century.

The demolition underscores broader changes in the Dutch postal system, which after a period of privatization in the early 2000s returned to private operators under the New Post Law of 2009. The loss of the Peters‑designed building has sparked local nostalgia and calls for greater attention to Bolsward’s architectural heritage.
