US-Canada trade war escalates with new tariffs and import bans

The trade war between the United States and Canada has escalated significantly following the collapse of recent negotiations. On September 8, 2026, Canada implemented retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on approximately US$20 billion worth of American imports, including steel, aluminum, dairy, electronics, and furniture.

In response, the Trump administration announced broad import bans on Canadian dairy products, motorcycles, and most alcoholic beverages, scheduled to take effect on September 29. Additionally, the U.S. will apply 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods, such as mattresses, motorboats, and golf carts, starting September 15. President Trump also directed the General Services Administration to exclude Canadian-origin products from federal procurement contracts.

The conflict has extended to the aerospace sector, with President Trump threatening to block sales of Bombardier aircraft in the U.S. unless the company moves production to American soil. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defended the retaliatory measures as necessary to protect domestic industries and signaled a strategic pivot to reduce Canada's economic dependence on the United States.
