Bombay High Court criticizes Mumbai pollution control delays
The Bombay High Court has rebuked civic authorities, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), and the Mumbai Police for failing to effectively enforce measures against air and noise pollution. During a hearing regarding a suo motu public interest litigation, a division bench comprising Justices Girish Kulkarni and Neela Gokhale expressed concern over the slow implementation of directions aimed at protecting the environment.
The court noted reports that Mumbai's pollution levels have surpassed those of Delhi, with visibility in some areas dropping below 500 meters. The judges questioned how officials could remain inactive while residents face such an emergency, particularly noting that Mumbai's natural sea breezes and open spaces should ideally mitigate these issues.
Key criticisms included the lack of enforcement regarding sound systems used during religious processions and the use of firecrackers on crowded streets. The court emphasized that public awareness campaigns must be backed by strict enforcement rather than just advisories. Additionally, the bench expressed disappointment regarding the suggestion that celebrity involvement in awareness campaigns was difficult due to high fees, suggesting that public figures should consider voluntary contributions to environmental causes.
