Bombay High Court declines to stay Maharashtra voter list revision
The Bombay High Court has declined to grant an interim stay on the removal of names from voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Maharashtra. A bench comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna ruled that issuing such an order would violate judicial propriety, as the Supreme Court of India is already considering legal challenges related to the SIR process.
The petition, filed by VBA youth president Sagar Ramesh Gavai, alleges that door-to-door voter verification is not following prescribed rules and that names are being removed arbitrarily. In response, the Election Commission of India (ECI) argued that the Supreme Court is conducting a broad hearing on SIR-related legal challenges and has previously directed high courts to avoid parallel proceedings.
The High Court has adjourned the matter for approximately three weeks, following the ECI's request. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter on October 8.
