Bombay High Court directs state on teachers' pension delay and reinstates suspended medical officer

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court reprimanded the Maharashtra state Urban Development Secretary for a three‑year delay in filing a response to a petition by the Maharashtra State Municipal Council Secondary and Higher Secondary Teachers’ Association. The petition seeks pension and other service‑equivalent benefits for municipal council teachers. The court ordered the department to appear, to file replies within a month, and the state issued an order applying the National Pension System to the teachers, directing a further affidavit on the criteria. The next hearing is set for August 10.

In a separate matter, a Division Bench of the Bombay High Court quashed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's suspension of a medical officer accused of irregularities in the issuance of roughly 87,000 birth certificates. The court found the corporation acted in undue haste and failed to conduct the mandatory preliminary inquiry before suspension. The officer was reinstated and ordered to receive full salary for the period he was suspended.
