Tarun Tejpal sentenced to 10 years in jail by Bombay High Court FAST-MOVING

The Bombay High Court’s Goa bench convicted former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal and sentenced him to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment for rape and related offences. The conviction was under Indian Penal Code sections 376(2)(f), 376(2)(k), 354A and 354B, and the court imposed fines of ₹5 lakh for each rape count, totalling more than ₹10 lakh. A division bench of Justices Neela Gokhale and Amit Jamsandekar delivered the judgment, granting Tejpal two weeks to surrender to jail authorities.

The verdict overturns a May 2021 acquittal by the Goa sessions court that had cleared Tejpal of all charges. The case originates from a November 2013 incident in which a junior colleague alleged that Tejpal sexually assaulted her inside a hotel elevator during Tehelka’s Think Fest event in Goa. The Goa government appealed the acquittal, with Solicitor General Tushar Mehta arguing for a strong message against sexual violence. Tejpal pleaded for leniency, citing his age, family and claiming he was a “political victim,” and said he would challenge the decision before the Supreme Court.
