Bommelerwaard greenhouse growers cited for environmental violations

Authorities have identified multiple violations at greenhouse companies in the Bommelerwaard region following a joint enforcement action. The operation was launched after measurements at fixed monitoring points in the area consistently detected high levels of prohibited crop protection products.

During the inspections, which involved Waterschap Rivierenland, Omgevingsdienst Rivierenland, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), and the Environmental Police, several infractions were documented. These included the discovery of banned pesticides, illegal discharges into surface water, and illegal discharges into the soil. Additionally, inspectors found improper storage of pesticides and a leaking waste container discharging wastewater.

Participating agencies are pursuing both administrative and criminal actions regarding these violations. Waterschap Rivierenland stated that such controls are vital because illegal discharges and prohibited chemicals pose a direct threat to water quality, and the organization intends to continue conducting unannounced enforcement days.
