Bomnal Bookstore to reopen in Tongyeong after flood damage
Bomnal Bookstore, a local cultural hub in Bongsu-gol, Tongyeong, is set to reopen on August 23 following extensive repairs caused by severe flooding. The bookstore, operated by the publisher Namhaeui Bomnal, was devastated by record-breaking rainfall in mid-August that triggered landslides and flooded the area with mud and debris.
The recovery process took 37 days and was supported by significant community and industry efforts. Volunteers, including local residents, military personnel, and carpenters, assisted with cleaning and structural repairs. To fund the restoration, the bookstore sold special book bundles, and the National Independent Bookstore Network raised approximately 13.77 million won to support the affected shops in the region.
In addition to physical repairs, such as building new walls to prevent future flooding, the bookstore is preparing for its reopening with various cultural events. These include a book talk by author Kim Ae-ran and a photo exhibition featuring images of the flood recovery process.
