Bonaire faces concerns over political interference in civil service

Eric van der Burg, the Dutch State Secretary for Kingdom Relations and Decisive Government, has expressed serious concerns regarding political interference in the civil service organization on Bonaire. During a visit to the island, Van der Burg stated that he has received signals that both members of the Island Council and non-council members are improperly involving themselves in administrative operations.

Van der Burg noted that while the Island Council elects administrators who manage the civil service, recent actions have bypassed this structure. He emphasized that such interference is unacceptable. The State Secretary also highlighted delays in decision-making and a lack of progress in critical areas, such as the management of the Selibon landfill and the development of public transportation, despite funds being made available by the Netherlands.

In response, Bonaire's Governor, John Soliano, stated that efforts are underway to establish stable and decisive governance. Soliano acknowledged that the island's rapid growth has outpaced its current infrastructure and administrative capacity, noting that Bonaire lacks certain institutional supports available to municipalities in the Netherlands, such as water boards and provinces.
