Bonaire launches new political party Partido Animo led by Nina den Heyer

Former Bonaire deputy Nina den Heyer announced the creation of a new political party, Partido Animo, with its headquarters being prepared in Tera Kòrá for an official launch slated for September. Den Heyer, who previously served with the Movementu di Pueblo Boneriano (MPB) and later sat as an independent deputy under the Democratic Party coalition, says the party will give her full control over the political agenda and candidate selection. Analysts question whether the party will bring substantive change or simply serve as a personal power base.

At the same time, Bonaire residents are voicing concerns about cultural and identity shifts on the island. In an interview, longtime resident Felipe “Chago” Melaan highlighted feelings of marginalisation among Dutch‑born islanders, pointing to a garden sign that reads “1863 slavery abolished – Many fewer Dutch” as a reminder of colonial legacy. Melaan’s remarks illustrate growing unease as newcomers increase and the Bonairian language and culture face pressure.

Both developments underscore a period of political restructuring and social tension on the Caribbean Dutch municipality.
