Bond yields surge as AI companies and governments increase borrowing

Inflation-adjusted borrowing costs, or real yields, have reached decade-high levels across major economies. This surge is driven by a massive increase in bond sales from both governments and artificial intelligence companies.

AI “hyperscalers,” including Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta, have issued nearly $220 billion in bonds this year. This volume is more than double the $108 billion issued throughout 2025. This influx of supply has created a competition for capital, as investors demand higher returns to absorb the increasing amount of debt hitting the market.

Simultaneously, governments continue to borrow heavily to fund deficits. The U.S. budget deficit is projected to reach $1.9 trillion, or 6% of GDP, this year, while France and Britain face deficits of 5% and 4%, respectively. In the U.S., 30-year real yields are near 18-year highs at approximately 3%, while 10-year real yields in the UK and Germany have reached their highest levels in over a decade.
