Bondi Beach footbridge: Man charged over alleged offensive behaviour

A 53-year-old man has been charged with behaving in an offensive manner in a public place following an incident at the Bondi Beach footbridge. The arrest occurred at 3pm on Friday at the northern pedestrian bridge.

According to NSW Police, the man allegedly performed offensive hand gestures. Witnesses reported that the individual hung a flag from the bridge; unverified social media images suggest the flag was Palestinian. The suspect was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and has been denied police bail.

The bridge was the site of a terror attack in December that resulted in the deaths of 15 people, most of whom were Jewish. This incident follows a previous case in April where a 22-year-old man was sentenced to prison for mimicking shooting on the same structure. The location remains a subject of debate, with NSW Premier Chris Minns previously expressing support for the bridge's removal to prevent it from serving as a “ghoulish reminder” of the violence.
