Bondi Beach shooting tied to prior Jewish group tip about alleged gunman

A leaked 2019 email from the Community Security Group (CSG), a Jewish community security team, warned NSW Police about a Salafi street‑preaching group in Bankstown and identified Naveed Akram as a close associate. The email, sent to the Terrorism Intelligence Unit, also named other individuals later convicted of supporting Islamic State.

Despite the warning, ASIO cleared the Akram family as non‑threats in 2020. Naveed’s brother, Sajid Akram, applied for a firearm licence in 2020 and was granted one in 2023 by the NSW Firearms Registry. On 14 December 2025, an Islamic State‑inspired attack occurred at Bondi Beach, with the perpetrators linked to the same network. The incident is under multiple investigations, including a criminal probe, a coronial inquest and a Royal Commission into antisemitism and social cohesion. NSW Premier Chris Minns has discussed expanding CSG’s authority to arm its personnel at public events.

The case highlights gaps between community intelligence, counter‑terrorism assessments and firearms licensing procedures.
