Spain and Argentina expand bone marrow donor registries
Health authorities in Spain and Argentina are intensifying efforts to expand bone marrow and hematopoietic progenitor cell (CPH) donor registries.
In Spain, the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (Redmo) has surpassed 533,000 registered donors. Recent data shows an increase in daily registrations, reaching approximately 77 new donors per day in 2026. This growth has led to a record number of effective donations and a higher probability of finding compatible donors for patients with leukemia or lymphoma.
In Argentina, the National Central Coordinator for Ablation and Implantation (INCUCAI) reported that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in donor typing. This allows for the local processing of samples without relying on international laboratories, accelerating the integration of Argentine donors into the World Marrow Donor Association. Argentina has seen a significant rise in transplants, with 992 performed so far this year.
Regional initiatives are also active, such as the Ministry of Health in Entre Ríos promoting registration through buccal swabs, and new programs in Río Grande aimed at early leukemia detection and donor recruitment.
