Bonghwa County pursues independent rural basic income program
Bonghwa County is accelerating its own rural basic income project to combat population decline and regional economic crises. Despite previously failing to be selected for government pilot programs, the county has been preparing an independent model to improve residents' quality of life and ensure sustainable development.
Following the inclusion of expanded rural basic income pilot programs in the 2027 government budget proposal, Bonghwa County is adopting a ‘two-track’ strategy. This involves advancing its independent initiative while simultaneously preparing to respond to future government recruitment calls. The county plans to align its local model with government standards to ensure a seamless transition if it is selected for official pilot programs.
County officials expect the basic income to stabilize household finances for farmers and stimulate the local economy by increasing consumption and boosting sales for small business owners.
