Bongi Mbonambi to return to Stormers following Sharks departure

Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi is set to leave the Sharks with immediate effect to rejoin the Stormers. The 35-year-old double World Cup winner is expected to link up with the Cape Town-based side as early as this week.

Mbonambi’s departure from the Sharks follows reports of a disciplinary process regarding an alleged breach of team rules during a pre-season team-building trip. While the veteran player had been fit and available, he was recently excluded from training and matchday squads, and his contract was reportedly under threat due to misconduct issues.

The move provides a significant boost for the Stormers, who are currently facing an injury crisis at the hooker position involving Deon Fourie, André-Hugo Venter, and Lukhanyo Vokozela. Mbonambi previously played for the Stormers and Western Province for six seasons between 2015 and 2021.
