Turkey fishing season sees abundant palamut supply and lower prices

The start of the new fishing season in Turkey has brought an abundant supply of fish, particularly palamut (bonito), to markets across the country. Following the lifting of the fishing ban on September 1, fishermen in the Black Sea, Aegean, and Marmara regions report one of the most productive starts in recent years.

In the Black Sea region, the abundance of palamut has led to a significant decrease in prices compared to the previous year. While prices for palamut reached as high as 600 lira last year due to scarcity, they are currently ranging between 75 and 150 lira depending on weight and size. Hamsi (anchovy) is also appearing early in markets, with prices noted around 150 to 200 lira.

In the Aegean Sea, fishermen report high yields of sardines, anchovies, horse mackerel, and chub mackerel. Industry representatives attribute this bounty to favorable weather conditions, including balanced sea temperatures and increased nutrient levels resulting from winter and spring rainfall. This abundance is expected to benefit both the fishing industry and consumers through more affordable seafood options.
