Bonito hosts state climate change forum and municipal environment summit

Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, is the venue for two major environmental events: the IV State Climate Change Forum and the III Meeting of Municipal Environment Secretariats. Held at the city's convention centre, the gatherings bring together state officials, municipal leaders, researchers and civil‑society representatives to examine climate impacts, adaptation strategies and the development of sustainable public policies.

Key participants included Alex Melotto, deputy secretary of the State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development (Semadesc); Ana Cristina Trevelin, Semadesc’s executive secretary for the environment; Bonito’s vice‑mayor Juliana Salvatore; municipal environment secretary Tiago Sabino; and Lucas Alves of the Institute of Waters of the Serra da Bodoquena. Speakers emphasized linking scientific research with municipal experience, revising the State Fishing Policy, addressing wild‑boar damage and pursuing the state’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2030 while cutting greenhouse‑gas emissions.

Among the initiatives presented was the CEP Rural project, a state‑run system that assigns official addresses to rural properties to improve communication and emergency response during extreme weather events. Melotto highlighted Bonito as a national example of balancing economic activity, conservation and quality of life, and stressed the need for differentiated policies that reflect the diverse climatic realities across Mato Grosso do Sul.
