Bonn considers cutting Theater Bonn drama department amid budget crisis
The city of Bonn is considering significant austerity measures to consolidate its budget, which may include the elimination of the drama department at Theater Bonn. City administration officials stated that previous efforts to save double-digit millions were insufficient to stabilize the municipal budget.
Bernhard Helmich, the general director of Theater Bonn, has publicly and vehemently opposed the proposal. Helmich, whose contract was recently extended until 2030, asserted, “With me as director, there will be no closure of the drama department.” He noted that the theater is already implementing its own cost-saving measures and cited previous agreements intended to preserve all departments of the theater.
Beyond the theater, Bonn's broader budget plan includes cutting 400 staff positions by 2031. Other proposed reductions affect public transportation, childcare funding, climate plan programs, free flu vaccinations for municipal employees, and the city's “Bonn macht happy” image campaign.
