Bonn police investigate human remains found in Rhine river wreck

Police in Bonn are investigating the discovery of human bones found inside a rusted Fiat 126 wreck at the bottom of the Rhine river near Königswinter. The vehicle, which lacks license plates, was spotted by firefighters in early August and recovered two weeks later.

Investigators believe the car may have been submerged for four to five decades, likely dating back to the 1970s or 1980s. It is currently unclear whether the remains belong to one individual or multiple people, and authorities are unsure if the vehicle entered the river at that location or drifted there with the current.

The Institute of Forensic Medicine in Cologne is examining the bones. While police have not yet identified any missing persons reports linked to the vehicle, they have not ruled out a connection to Poland.
