Bonomo Hospital begins refractory angina treatment with Reducer stents

The hemodynamics unit at Bonomo Hospital in Andria has launched a new treatment program for chronic refractory myocardial ischemia. The program utilizes the implantation of Reducer devices within the coronary sinus.

Medical teams successfully performed the first implants on two male patients, aged 59 and 72, who had suffered from refractory angina despite optimized medical therapy. The procedure is a minimally invasive percutaneous intervention performed under fluoroscopic guidance via the right internal jugular vein. The hourglass-shaped steel stent is positioned in the coronary sinus to increase retrograde venous pressure, which redistributes blood flow to optimize myocardial perfusion.

Dr. Giovanni Valenti noted that the treatment is intended for “no-option” patients—those with persistent, disabling chest pain for whom standard revascularization procedures, such as coronary angioplasty or bypass surgery, are not clinically or anatomically feasible. The clinical management is conducted in synergy with the Cardiology unit, with patients typically discharged within 24 to 48 hours following the procedure.
