Bončuk Stadium in Dupnica Revived After Historic Bayern Munich Upset

Bončuk Stadium in the Bulgarian town of Dupnica was built in 1952 with a capacity of over 16,000 spectators and once served as the pride of the city. In the autumn of 1977, the stadium hosted a memorable UEFA Cup tie in which local club Marek defeated European powerhouse Bayern Munich 2‑0, a result that shocked the continent and remains a celebrated moment in the club’s history.

After decades of financial trouble and the club’s decline, the stadium fell into disrepair, its stands losing their former shine. Recent efforts have partially restored the venue, allowing it to host lower‑division matches again and bringing football back to the community.

The story of Bončuk Stadium reflects both a historic sporting upset and the challenges of preserving local football heritage in smaller European towns.
