Book on PC Farias' Corruption, Escape and Death Released in Brazil

Journalist Xico Sá has published a new book, "O tesoureiro: o esquema de corrupção, a fuga espetacular e a morte de PC Farias," chronicling the life and violent end of Paulo César Farias, the former treasurer of President Fernando Collor. The work recounts the 1996 double homicide of Farias and his girlfriend Suzana Marcolino in Maceió, the mystery surrounding the Guaxuma beach murder, and Farias' dramatic escape through Paraguay, Argentina, the Caribbean and Europe. Justice officials have dismissed a murder‑suicide scenario but have not identified perpetrators, leaving the case unresolved thirty years later. The book arrives in Brazilian bookstores in the coming weeks, offering a detailed narrative of one of the most investigated scandals of the 1990s.

The publication also reflects on the broader political corruption of Brazil's early 1990s, drawing on Sá’s own reporting from the era and providing a literary revisit to a period that shaped the country's recent history.
