BookTok phenomenon drives surge in literary sales and shifts reading habits
The BookTok community on TikTok is significantly reshaping book consumption and production, particularly among readers aged 18 to 25. This digital movement, which gained momentum in Brazil during the pandemic, has transformed the literary market by creating a professionalized ecosystem involving major publishing houses.
One notable example of this influence is the resurgence of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 19th-century novella, ‘White Nights’. The work has become a bestseller in Brazil, with Editora 34 reporting a 463 percent year-on-year increase in sales. The trend has also extended to the United Kingdom and Spain. Influencers suggest that Gen Z readers connect with the novella’s themes of loneliness and the ‘solitary dreamer’.
However, the phenomenon faces criticism regarding the quality of literature promoted and the emergence of a ‘fast-forward generation’. Researchers note concerns over superficial reading habits, such as using artificial intelligence for summaries or skipping chapters. Despite these debates, proponents argue that the movement’s primary value lies in encouraging young people to develop a consistent reading habit.
