Boom Supersonic faces delays for Overture airliner
Boom Supersonic is facing skepticism regarding its timeline to launch the Overture passenger jet by 2029. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby stated in a recent podcast interview that the 2029 delivery goal is unlikely to be met and will take longer.
In addition to its aviation goals, the company is pivoting toward the energy sector by developing natural gas turbines to power AI data centers. Boom recently unveiled a new factory in Centennial, Colorado, dedicated to producing the Superpower 42-megawatt turbine. The company aims to deliver its first gas turbines to data center customers by mid-2027, with plans to scale production to 50 turbines annually by 2029.
Boom maintains that its turbine development is synergistic with its Symphony engine design for the Overture airliner. The company has completed a prototype turbine core, known as Sprint Core, which is intended to power both the data center turbines and the aircraft engines. Testing for this core is scheduled to take place at the Colorado Air and Space Port.
