Boom Supersonic prepares to test Symphony engine for Overture aircraft

Marking 23 years since the Concorde's final commercial flight, Boom Supersonic has completed the assembly of the core for its Symphony engine. The company plans to ignite the engine for the first time in November.

The Symphony engine is designed to power Overture, a passenger aircraft capable of carrying 60 to 80 people at speeds of Mach 1.7. This technology aims to reduce travel time between cities like London and New York to approximately three and a half hours. Boom Supersonic intends to offer ticket prices comparable to current business class fares.

While the company previously collaborated with Rolls-Royce, it has moved forward with its own engine production. Overture is expected to begin test flights in 2027, with a goal to commence commercial passenger service by 2030. The aircraft will be manufactured in Greensboro, North Carolina, and already has 130 pre-orders from airlines including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Japan Airlines.
