Boone Fire Department issues back-to-school safety tips
As classes begin for Watauga County and Appalachian State University students, the Boone Fire Department has issued safety recommendations for the upcoming school year.
To prepare for the transition, officials advise motorists to remain vigilant for stopped school buses. For students and parents, the department emphasizes the importance of having a Home Escape Plan. Key safety advice includes practicing escape routes twice a year, knowing two ways out of every room, and establishing a designated meeting place.
Additionally, the department warns against leaving matches or lighters within reach of children and notes that unattended cooking remains a leading cause of home fires. Families are encouraged to plan meals that do not require stoves or ovens when children are home alone.
