BootLoops AI system solves problems across 22 scientific fields

The AI system BootLoops, developed with assistance from the Claude model, has successfully addressed problems across 22 different scientific disciplines. Led by physicist Matthew Schwartz, the project generated 36 scientific manuscripts in just three months, covering fields such as linguistics, ecology, genetics, economics, and health policy.

As detailed in the journal Science, the initiative demonstrates a new method of interdisciplinary research. Rather than attempting to solve entirely new or impossible problems, the AI utilizes existing mathematical tools, algorithms, and computer techniques to connect disparate pieces of information that researchers had previously failed to integrate.

Schwartz, a theoretical physics researcher, used Claude to create protocols that allow language models to perform systematic quantitative calculations, reproduce complex math, and write code. While the results show significant potential for combining AI with human expertise, researchers emphasize that these findings still require external evaluation and scientific context.
