Border crossing delays impact Mexicali economy

Long queues at the border crossings between Mexicali, Mexico, and Calexico, United States, are negatively impacting the local economy. The restaurant sector is particularly affected due to its close ties to medical tourism, as many visitors arrive from the U.S. for dental work and surgeries.

Alan Diego, president of CANIRAC Mexicali, stated that approximately 40 percent of restaurant customers come from the United States, primarily during weekends. Medical professionals, including orthodontists, have reported that patients are seeking ways to expedite the process, as wait times can last between one and two hours.

Local authorities have held meetings with Mexican federal customs representatives to request faster inspections toward Mexico and an increase in the number of lanes. However, improvements on the Calexico side are reportedly restricted due to national security concerns.
