Border crossings between Argentina and Chile face delays
Authorities in Argentina and Chile are managing delays and safety evaluations for key international mountain passes.
At the Agua Negra International Pass, which connects San Juan with Chile, officials are prioritizing public safety before reopening the corridor. Emilio Achem, Secretary of the Government, stated that the decision to enable transit requires a joint analysis by both Argentine and Chilean authorities to ensure road conditions are safe for vehicles. Recent statistics for the corridor show significant usage, with over 21,000 vehicles and 72,000 people crossing between late 2025 and mid-2026.
Meanwhile, the reopening of the Pehuenche International Pass, connecting Malargüe in Mendoza with Chile’s Maule Region, has been postponed by approximately one week. The delay is due to avalanches and heavy snow accumulation on the Chilean side, specifically affecting Route 115-CH. While clearing efforts are underway, the pass has remained closed since mid-July. On the Argentine side, Route 145 also remains completely cut off at the border, requiring coordinated efforts between both nations to restore international transit.
